LOUISIANA HIGHWAY 1, PHASE 1B - PORT FOURCHON TO LEEVILLE PARISH, LOUISIANA
Port Fourchon, Louisiana
Louisiana Highway LA1 is the central artery for Lafourche Parish from Thibodaux to Grand Isle on the Gulf of Mexico, and supports a major operations center for the offshore industry at Port Fourchon. The main hurricane evacuation route for the southern part of the parish, LA1 follows original ground in the wetland area, south of the Golden Meadow levees, and experiences frequent flooding.
Phase 1B of the project included the construction of a four-mile-long, high-level bridge with connecting ramps and interchanges as well as asphalt paving along the north and south connector ramp lines. Additionally, the existing lift-span bridge over Bayou Lafourche was removed, and a new toll station built.
The work not accessible by crane barges was required to be performed from a trestle to minimize damage to the marsh areas. Bridge piers adjacent to the navigation channel required waterline footings in a tidal area.
