BELLE CHASSE BRIDGE & TUNNEL REPLACEMENT

Belle Chasse, Louisiana

The Belle Chasse Bridge & Tunnel Replacement Project consists of replacing the existing Judge Perez Lift Span Bridge and the Belle Chasse Tunnel crossing the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (GIWW) with a fly-through toll, fixed spans bridge, approximately 3,387 feet long, with four 12-foot lanes with 4-foot shoulders, plus a 5-foot pedestrian path. Also included with this P3 project will be the demolition of the existing lift bridge and decommissioning of the tunnel.

Currently the bridge and tunnel serve as the primary access points for the residents, businesses, and industries of western Plaquemines Parish. Both the bridge and tunnel are located on the LA 23 corridor, which has a current traffic volume in excess of 33,000 vehicles per day.

Replacement of these structures will allow for safer and more reliable access for the residents, businesses, and industries in the area. Improving the connectivity via this corridor will address the current conditions and operational constraints created by aging infrastructure.
